Starting today, storm victims can apply for aid through an $800 million recovery fund in Pinellas County. The money will fix homes, assist with buying new ones, and cover costs from Hurricanes Helene and Milton's destruction.

The aid targets those still picking up the pieces after last year's storms struck. Money comes straight from Washington, with HUD backing several aid options. Short-term fixes and long-term rebuilding both fall under the plan's scope.

"The fact that we've got this done really in government terms — this is lightning speed to be able to do this a year after the event. We're going to be taking applications and getting money in people's hands by Christmas," said County Commission Chair Brian Scott, according to FOX 13 News.

Most funds, a full 70 percent, go to those who need it most. If you own a home and make up to $87,600 alone, or $125,160 with three family members, you might qualify. These numbers match 120% of what typical county residents earn.

Extra cash awaits those hit hardest by bills after the storms. Singles making $58,450 or less, and families of four earning under $83,450, can get help with rent, mortgages, and utilities. The storms left many struggling to keep up with these basic costs.

Property owners who rent units can tap into funds too, but they must keep rents low. The rules are strict: only main homes count. No vacation properties make the cut.

Those living in St. Petersburg must wait until November. Right now, only folks outside city limits can sign up.

Two offices just opened to help with paperwork. Find one in Clearwater at 2600 McCormick Drive, Suite 100. The other sits in north St. Petersburg at 5000 Park St. N., Suite 4. Both welcome visitors from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Want to apply? Visit recover.pinellas.gov or dial 727-606-3307. After helping those who need it most, officials might open the program to others affected by the storms.
