City officials approved changes to Britton Plaza's zoning rules, paving the way for its transformation. The 30-acre site will stay retail-focused, with part of the land switching from homes to shops.
Brixmor Property Group, which took over the plaza last November, can now move forward with their plans. They asked 500 nearby residents what they wanted in their shopping center this past March.
"Mid-priced stores so that people around here can afford them because not everyone here lives in a mansion," local shopper Karen McKinney said, according to WTSP. She stressed the need for stores that fit the budgets of MacDill Air Force Base neighbors.
After gathering input, Brixmor unveiled their vision through design plans. A company spokesperson stated, "In May, we shared community feedback and conceptual drawings with prospective retailers to help gauge interest, and we are encouraged by the positive feedback."
The choice to keep retail space won support from locals who feared new housing might clog streets. Which stores will fill the updated center remains under wraps.
Since 1956, this spot has served South Tampa shoppers. Brixmor runs 360 shopping centers nationwide, aiming to create spaces "where retailers and communities connect and thrive," as stated on their website.
Business continues as usual while updates take shape. The timeline for construction stays unclear.
