Tampa struck a three-year contract with One.network to push road and lane closure data to GPS providers as events unfold. Officials can now update traffic conditions with a few clicks. Before, they relied on spreadsheets and emails.
The system pipes information straight to Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze within minutes. Previously, officials contacted each GPS provider separately, which slowed everything down.
"We understand the pain," Tampa interim mobility director Brandon Campbell said of traffic woes in the area, according to FOX 13. "We work pretty hard on the front end to try to coordinate when and where those work zones will happen. This is a real-time tool though for coordinating the impact of those work zones."
Traffic managers and construction crews can report road closures and other problems through a few clicks on the platform. Campbell said the city will keep adjusting the product as needed over the next three years.
People can view what One.network transmits to GPS apps on the local government's road closures website. The site allows residents to click on different road projects for more details on traffic impacts and timelines.
ConsumerAffairs ranked the area as having the 13th-worst traffic earlier this year. They examined data from the nation's 50 most populous metro regions.
"Me and all my friends think it's so much faster to walk because, by the time you get in the car and drive — all the lights and the traffic and all the detours you have to take just to get out of the way of what they're doing — it takes longer," driver Ava Sills told FOX 13. "You might as well walk."
