Pinellas County Animal Services has added the Petco Love Lost tool to its Found Center website to reunite pets with their families. This platform scans uploaded pictures for unique features, comparing them against a national database.
The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that millions of dogs and cats go missing or get stolen in the U.S. each year. To tackle this, Petco Love Lost uses artificial intelligence to enhance reunification. Jennifer Renner, Pinellas County Animal Services director, mentioned, "We're always looking for more tools to put in our toolkit to help pets get home first and foremost," Renner said to St. Pete Catalyst.
Since introducing the platform, the county's reunion rate for dogs has increased from 40% to 50%. The national rate is lower. Renner commented, "Normally, we're seeing about a 40 percent return rate for dogs, and in the Petco Love Lost system, currently we're at a 50 percent return on animals that are uploaded into that system."
The platform encourages those who find lost pets and their owners to upload images. They can include details like where the pet was found. The software checks the images for unique features like different colored eyes or spots.
Renner mentioned that officers take pictures of found pets on the spot and upload them immediately, allowing for quick matching. "As soon as our officers pick up a pet out in the field, they take a picture and upload it to our website. That’s updated in real-time and goes right to the Petco Love Lost integration and starts looking for matches immediately," she explained.
Pinellas County Animal Services advises pet owners to keep their microchip information updated and ensure their pets wear ID collars. This guidance aims to reduce the number of pets ending up in the shelter.
This integration also eases the shelter's workload, reuniting pets with families before they even enter the facility. This approach helps to alleviate stress on pets and shelter staff.
Located at 12450 Ulmerton Road, the Pinellas County Animal Services shelter works to improve care and manage disease with advanced facilities. The shelter urges pet owners to check locally and use Petco Love Lost to find missing pets.
Renner compares the new system to a "Google" for pets, with hopes of increasing its efficiency. "This has been quite the revelation to be able to use AI to this level and already see success," Renner expressed.
Collaborating with SPCA Tampa Bay for a centralized lost-and-found, the service focuses on cats and dogs. It directs other animal cases to specialized centers.
Pinellas County Animal Services has resumed full operations after addressing a canine pneumovirus, highlighting the challenges of shelter health alongside reunification efforts.
Petco Love Lost provides a free national database for ongoing updates, notifying owners when their pet is found. It's a significant step in pet reunification, improving effectiveness in matching lost pets with their families.
