The famous Soho Saloon in South Tampa is shutting down after 14 long years. The bar, located at 410 S. Howard Ave., announced its closure on Instagram, hinting at a move towards "something new".

Michael Disser of Disser Hospitality Investment has plans for a revamp. His vision includes a “better atmosphere, stronger concept, and unforgettable nights in Soho.” Disser's company also runs Sunset Rodeo, a nearby Nashville-themed music spot, along with another venue, Howard & Platt, opening soon.

A new bar is on the way for the location where Deck Pizza/Side Piece used to be, set to open in the coming months. Though Disser hasn’t shared why these changes are happening, they come after a local crackdown on fake IDs. The operation, called “Operation Buzzkill," led to over 50 arrests across Soho and Ybor City.

The closure highlights yet another change on South Howard Avenue. Once buzzing with lively bars and restaurants, old spots like Chatterbox Lounge have come and gone. Danny Lea, a former Chatterbox manager, fondly recalled, “We had it all. From the kings and queens to the pork and beans.” The area attracted a diverse crowd, including students, legal professionals, and politicians.

Chatterbox was known for live music and operated for many years before its closure in 2001. Its owner sold the property, leading to its demise. The Soho area continues to evolve with local favorites like Rose Bar, Green Lemon, and Bern’s Steakhouse.

Hyde Park, encompassing South Howard Avenue, has been a popular spot since the 1880s. Developments around the Tampa Bay Hotel expanded options for infrastructure and entertainment, laying groundwork for what Soho is today. New ventures in the bar scene are part of this ongoing story.

Though Soho Saloon's run is over, fresh projects highlight Tampa’s nightlife evolution. Residents are eager to see what's next for this vibrant neighborhood.
