Tampa International Airport unveiled a wave of tech improvements today. The airport braces for more than 3.1 million passengers during spring break's 40-day stretch, which wraps up April 13. Expect crowds of 75,000 to 80,000 travelers daily.

Airside shuttles serving terminals A and C now run with updated software and rebuilt systems. Digital boards will broadcast live security wait times across the Main Terminal's Shuttle Lobby at Airside A, powered by LiDAR tech that monitors how passengers move.

Touchless ID lanes opened this week at Airside E for TSA PreCheck members. The setup uses facial comparison tech for quicker identity checks. Images get erased within 24 hours after departure. Passengers on American, Alaska, Delta, Southwest, and United can access it.

"Of course, you can opt out of it if you don't want to use it, but if you do, a number of select airlines are participating," said Veronica Cintron, VP of Marketing Communications and Strategy at TPA, according to WTSP.com. "It is great to get you through that line much faster with less contact, less exchanging of IDs and such."

International arrivals will experience customs processing wait times slashed by 25 percent through Enhanced Passenger Processing. TPA ranks among the first 15 airports nationwide rolling out this biometric system.

March 22 could break records. More than 90,000 passengers might flood the terminals that day. "That's as many people as you'd see at a home game for the Bucs, the Lightning and the Rays combined," said Beau Zimmer, public relations manager for the airport.

International conflicts are scrambling flight schedules, warns travel expert Amy West. "We're seeing unprecedented cancellations," West said, per 10 Tampa Bay. "That ripple effect is certainly going to be seen in our spring break travel."

West suggests travelers think about buying travel insurance and signing up for the U.S. State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. AAA reports Florida cities rule the list of top spring break spots this year—Orlando, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa lead the pack.

Airport staff urge travelers to arrive two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international trips. Passengers can order food ahead through TPA to Go via Uber Eats or Starbucks apps. Parking can be reserved at least 24 hours beforehand for cheaper rates.
