The Tampa Bay Rays held a town hall Wednesday night at The Press Box. They wanted to discuss a proposed $2.3 billion ballpark and construction project at Hillsborough College's Dale Mabry campus. This was the team's fourth session where they gathered feedback from supporters.
CEO Ken Babby ran the discussion and answered questions. Beers were on him.
"There have been many starts, stops and prior attempts," Babby said, according to Fox 13 News. "We're going to make this happen, this is Tampa's deal, and we're excited to bring it home."
The team wants to build at the Dale Mabry campus. It would become their permanent home. The plan involves a mixed-use area surrounding the ballpark.
Fans filled the sports bar on MLB Opening Night. Dale Hoffman showed up and said the energy reminded him why he loves attending games.
"The excitement, hearing the bat hit ball, and enjoying being with friends out at the ballpark," Hoffman said.
Donnie Smith arrived with questions. He wanted to know how the project will advance. "Are they going to allow it to come into Hillsborough County," he said. "How do they go through the approval process and what are the next steps?"
Sam Hage wants the team to stay local. "We love The Trop, but eventually they have to get a new stadium," he said. "So, hopefully it is here."
The club also rolled out a promotion. The "First One's On Us" offer provides $10 in virtual credit per ticket during April home games, which fans can use on concessions or merchandise at Tropicana Field.
Babby said Opening Day holds a special place for the team and its supporters. "Tomorrow is like a holiday, as there's nothing better than Opening Day," he said. "Of course, the only thing better than tomorrow will be on April 6th, back here at Tropicana Field."
The team starts its season Thursday in St. Louis, where they'll face the Cardinals. The next town hall is scheduled for April 2 at Robinson High School.
