St. Petersburg officials gave updates on downtown street conversions and port redevelopment at a Developer's Council meeting Tuesday. The Transportation Department is hammering out an agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation to convert 3rd and 4th Streets to two-way thoroughfares.
Evan Mory, director of transportation for the municipality, explained the conversion can shorten trips for drivers. "It will shorten trips because drivers can go directly to the destination," Mory said, according to the St. Pete Catalyst. "They don't have to go past it and then come back."
The effort is part of a multi-year initiative dating back to 2001. Officials want to update one-way streets downtown. Conversions on 1st and 2nd Streets, 2nd Avenue South, and Mirror Lake Drive have been completed. A 2021 survey showed 58% of participants were supportive of the 3rd and 4th Street conversion — showing strong support from residents.
FDOT has set aside funds in a multi-year plan for the work. Design is expected to begin in 2029 once funding is secured, with construction anticipated to start in 2031 or 2032.
Beth Herendeen, managing director of development administration, gave updates on waterfront projects. A draft master plan for the Port of St. Petersburg was presented to the Public Services and Infrastructure Committee on March 12. The previous plan was released in 1999 — over two decades ago.
Concepts include a terminal building for small cruise ships, a dock, a park, and restaurant space. The plan also mentions potential for a maintenance, repair, and overhaul area. Additional parking options are being considered.
Staff is working on a contract with contractor Skanska. They'll handle redevelopment of the Municipal Marina. The agreement will be reviewed by the council in the next few months, Herendeen explained. Skanska was selected in February.
The Tampa Bay Rowdies men's soccer team has asked for a one-year extension at Al Lang Stadium. This will be presented to the council within the next few months.
Tropicana Field is ready. The Tampa Bay Rays' home opener on April 6 will happen after repairs from Hurricane Milton damage in 2024. Herendeen said the work was completed on time and under budget.
